PM on alcohol use statistics: 5 liters change nothing

“In my opinion, that does not change anything. Perhaps this will give a reason for someone to vote differently,” he told reporters on Tuesday.

Statistics Lithuania earlier in the day released figures showing that Lithuania’s pure alcohol consumption per person aged 15 years and over last year amounted to 13.2 liters, compared with the WTO estimate of 18.2 liters.

Skvernelis said that no matter what statistics show, the real situation in the country calls for reducing alcohol access.

“We did not rely on one statistical number, but looked at the situation we actually have. We took a complex approach and looked at alcohol use per person aged over 15 and at consequences, primarily for health, mortality and alcohol-related accidents, and so on,” he said.

The Lithuanian parliament is currently debating a package of measures aimed at restricting alcohol access, such as complete ban on alcohol advertising, shortening of alcohol sale hours and raising of the minimum legal drinking age to 20 years old.
