Polish Sejm considers condemning ‘Lithuanian nationalism’

According to the wording of the bill, “fascism, German Nazism, Ukrainian and Lithuanian nationalism, Prussian, Russian and German militarism are considered as other totalitarian regimes” in addition to communism.

Lithuania’s ambassador to Warsaw has sent a letter to the Polish president’s office, the Sejm and several ministries regarding the bill, which he worries would make it possible to demolish monuments to Lithuanians.

Gediminas Kirkilas, a moderate MP and a Chairman of the Seimas’ Committee on European Affairs was not very diplomatic today. ‘I am evaluating it negatively, this is an unfriendly gesture toward Lithuania and Ukraine, and to some extend toward Germany. In my opinion it is a bed precedent. We have voiced our concern via diplomatic channels already,’ Kirkilas said to DELFI. According to the Chairman any politicians’ attempts to give their verdict on historical events are never fruitful.

According to the DELFI sources this proposal has been erased from the Polish Sejm agenda today.
