President Grybauskaitė calls for more US presence in Lithuania as she sends off new NATO ambassador

She spoke on Wednesday after presenting letters of credence to Lithuania’s new ambassador to NATO, Vytautas Leškevičius.

According to the president, Lithuania should seek stronger US and NATO presence in Lithuania and the whole region. As regards NATO’s relations with its partner countries, the president underscored the importance of strengthening the Alliance’s cooperation with Ukraine, including greater assistance and support for reforms in this country, the President’s Office said in a press release.

After starting his diplomatic career in 1996, Leškevičius has lately served as Lithuania’s Ambassador to the Council of Europe after working as foreign vice-minister.

In the post as permanent representative to NATO, he will replace Kęstutis Jankauskas who has been appointed as the new head of the European Union’s (EU) monitoring mission in Georgia.
