The president underlined that this year Europe and the world commemorated the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. Historical experience acquired by Europe had made it clear that the division and wall-building did not lead to progress and development.
“The Federal Republic of Germany had never recognised the Soviet occupation of Lithuania. We are grateful for the solidarity and support of the German people to Lithuania’s fight for freedom. The Fall of the Berlin Wall and the Baltic Way have bound us together. These two landmark events shaped the history of Europe, Germany’s reunification and Lithuania’s independence,” the president wrote in her message of congratulations.
She noted that for more than two decades the two countries – partners and allies – had been successfully building a bilateral political dialogue based on mutual understanding and respect as well as expanding contacts in trade, culture and societal matters.
In the context of today’s challenges, the president wrote in the congratulatory message, all EU member states and citizens have the opportunity to review core European principles and continue fostering and consolidating them in the spirit of freedom, democracy and solidarity.
