President Grybauskaitė congratulates people on World Lithuanians’ Unity Day

“The 17 July is the World Lithuanians’ Unity Day. Let it unite millions of hearts because Lithuania is the most precious of what we have. Let us be proud in our homeland and cherish the Lithuanian language and traditions regardless of where we live,” the president’s message of congratulations reads.

On 7 February 1932, the Association for Support of Lithuanians Abroad was founded in Kaunas. On the Association’s initiative 17 July, the day of death of Lithuanian hero pilots Steponas Darius and Stasys Girėnas, was chosen as the day to commemorate the unity of Lithuanian Americans and later the unity of Lithuanians across the globe.
