On 7 February 1932, the Association for Support of Lithuanians Abroad was founded in Kaunas. On the Association’s initiative 17 July, the day of death of Lithuanian hero pilots Steponas Darius and Stasys Girėnas, was chosen as the day to commemorate the unity of Lithuanian Americans and later the unity of Lithuanians across the globe.
