President Grybauskaitė: Cooperation between Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine strengthens regional security

The president underlined that Lithuania and Poland were among the most active supporters of Ukraine, always ready to help this nation as it proceeds along the path of European integration.

“Today we all share the same objective: to ensure secure life and well-being for our people. We have a common understanding of the geopolitical situation and threats to our region. The closer our cooperation is at all levels, the more secure and stable our region will be,” the president said.

The Lithuanian head of state and the three parliamentary speakers discussed the outcome of the Eastern Partnership summit held in Riga last week as well as the situation in Ukraine. The president reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to continue supporting Ukraine and Eastern partners as they implement democratic reforms and pursue the European path. It is important for Ukraine to carry on with reforms and meet recommendations of the European Commission for a visa-free regime with the EU.

According to the president, Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine have many examples of successful trilateral collaboration. The recently established Lithuanian-Polish-Ukrainian military brigade LitPolUkrBrig is one of such examples. The brigade will strengthen the strategic partnership and military cooperation between the three countries. The constitutional courts of these states also enjoy effective interaction.

During the meeting, views were also exchanged on other possibilities and measures to strengthen trilateral cooperation and improve the situation in the region. It is important to pool efforts to counter propaganda and cooperate actively in international organisations and with parliaments of other countries.
