President Grybauskaitė: GIPL will allow to import gas at best price

On Thursday Grybauskaitė participated in the signing ceremony of the agreement on the funding of the Gas Interconnection Poland-Lithuania (GIPL) in Brussels. The president says the completion of the project will allow consumers to receive gas at the lowest price available.

“Competitive opportunities emerge, as well as a guarantee for our people that gas will always be sufficient and we will be able to choose from the cheapest price on the market,” Grybauskaitė told journalists in Brussels.

According to the president, economic relations with Poland were rarely influenced by political processes, yet the signing of the agreement was accelerated by the European Union‘s funding – the European Commission intends to allocate EUR 295 million for GIPL construction which will cost a total of EUR 558 million, another EUR 10 million will be granted for research.

700mm wide gas pipeline will connect Lithuania’s Jauniūnai and Poland’s Rembelszczyzna compressor stations. The pipeline will be 534km long, of which 357km will be laid in Poland and 177km in Lithuania. The construction work is planned to be completed in late 2020.
