The president’s press office informs that the NATO summit in Wales agreed to ensure continuing presence of US and NATO forces in the Baltics and Poland. Defence plans are to be reviewed and updates continually and in response to developments in security environment. Collective defence of the alliance is also to be strengthened, creating rapid response squads. Lithuania and other Baltic states are to host NATO headquarters.
In Grybauskaitė’s words, Russia is pursuing aggression against Ukraine, and “can go further”, unless NATO and the EU gives adequate response.
“The measures approved in Wales meant not only reinforced Alliance defence capabilities, but also a very clear commitment to defend Lithuania and other Baltic states in the event of a threat,” said the president’s office.
