President Grybauskaitė told the LRT radio that nepotism and uncontrolled proliferation municipal companies must be stopped by law. According to the president, there are other measures that need to be taken in order to rein in corruption.
The president said: “I am initiating a prohibition for state and municipality companies to support their own founders, because that is a conflict of interest. Moreover, it should not be allowed for politicians and political parties to receive any services free of charge. Information about the aid must be disclosed and declared.“
According to the president, an comprehensive approach is required in order to achieve results.
The president said: “I really hope that, together with the Parliamentary Anti-Corruption Commission, we will be able to find solutions.” She added that, while under the Soviet Union politicians would readily use their positions to get access to public resources for their personal needs, such behaviour was unacceptable today.
