Berankis, who is ranked 92nd in the world tennis rankings, started the tournament in a match with Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky.
Berankis was unable to counter Stakhovsky’s game, and surrendered on three straight sets – 6-2, 7-5, 6-1. It was the second encounter between the two, and in their previous clash, Berankis celebrated a victory of 6-2, 7-6(4), 7-5 in the first round of the 2013 Australian Open.
Another player from the Baltic states in the Roland Garros tournament is Latvian Ernests Gulbis. The 26 year old Latvian is currently 25th in the world rankings.
Berankis will now begin preparations for the “grass season” of tennis tournaments – the highlight of which is Wimbledon in the United Kingdom.
Wimbledon, won by Andy Murray in 2014, will run from June 29 to July 12.
