“We received a complaint and we wrote a reply that there were possible violations,” Edmundas Vaitekūnas, chairman of the Lithuanian Radio and Television Commission (LRTK), told BNS.
According to the LRTK, the complaint was over Vladimir Solovyov‘s talk show Duel, broadcast on Mar. 16, in which Russia’s State Duma member Vladimir Zhirinovsky denied the right of the former Soviet republics to independence and vowed to restore the former borders of the Soviet Union by using force.
RTR Planeta was last sanctioned for inciting to war and ethnic hatred last November, when it was slapped with a three-month suspension of its broadcasts in Lithuania over violations in Solovyov’s Duel featuring the same Russian politician. The sanction ended on Feb. 21.
RTR Planeta appealed the Lithuanian regulator’s decision to the European Commission, but the EU’s executive body decided that the suspension was compatible with EU law.
