Russia closes four McDonald’s in Moscow

Russia‘s food safety watchdog has temporarily shut down four McDonald’s in Moscow for what they say are sanitary violations.

The closures come amid worsening ties between the US and Russia over the ongoing situation in Ukraine.

The move prompting some to wonder if it’s politically motivated.

“They occasionally kick us with different sanctions. Why cannot we do something in return? Moreover, McDonald’s is such a symbol of everything Western, I thing it is a good symbolic step that shows that we have some teeth,” says Ivan, a customer at McDonald’s.

One of the McDonald’s affected by the closures is the first one to have opened in Russia.

The company says its the most frequented McDonald’s in the world, and they’re hoping to get back to business as soon as possible.
