Russian military flexes muscles near Baltics

The exercise is meant to test communications and command systems, the agency reports referring to an official statement.

During the snap military exercise, the Russian Defence Ministry is moving Iskander ballistic missiles to Kaliningrad Oblast, news agency TASS said referring to a source at the ministry.

“The land force in the Baltics will be bolstered with Iskander ballistic missiles from the Western Military District with the help of the large landing ships of the Baltic fleet,” TASS informs.

There is no information whether the missiles are being transported from the 26th Missile Brigade, located near Luga, or the 112th Missile Brigade stationed near Shuya.

The Western Military District also organized an exercise in December 2014 to run tests of missile transport to Kaliningrad Oblast.

After that exercise ended, the missiles were taken back to whence they had come.

Foreign media reported in 2013 that Iskander-M ballistic missiles had been deployed in Russia’s Kaliningrad enclave on permanent basis. Russian Army has not officially confirmed these reports.
