Three of the four interceptions completed last week were triggered off by a Russian IL-20 electronic reconnaissance aircraft.
Two of the IL-20 flights in the international airspace were carried out in accordance with a pre-filed flight plan, with switched-off onboard transponder and in communication with air traffic control centers, while the third flight was conducted without a flight plan, with switched-off onboard transponder, and without maintaining radio communication with air traffic control centers.
The fourth interception during the period concerned a Russian SU-27 fighter aircraft and an AN-26 transport aircraft, both flying without having pre-filed flight plans and without using onboard transponders but in communication with air traffic control centers.
The NATO Baltic air policing mission is conducted from the aviation bases in Šiauliai, northern Lithuania, and Amari, Estonia. Four German Eurofighter Typhoons are stationed at the Estonian base.
