In 2014 a Lithuanian citizen reported to SSD that he had found a photo of a head of a Vilnius company in a Russian separatist uniform.
Lithuanian intelligence started an investigation and found that Akopov actually participated in the Russian campaign against Ukraine. Akopov assembled and trained a group of men with whom he later participated in the capturing of Donetsk municipal administration building.
In December, 2015, Akopov was announced persona non grata and his permission to live in Lithuania has been withdrawn.
