“The topic is regional security situation, we want ministers of national defense and interior affairs, as well as heads of agencies to present the updated information about the regional security situation. We will talk about the Swedish case (of terrorism), our performance in counter-terrorism, as well as management of emergency situations, development of defense capacities,” the committee’s chairman Vytautas Bakas told BNS in comment of the Wednesday’s meeting.
“The security situation in the region and the Zapad training are among the main reasons,” said the committee’s leader.
Russia and Belarus are holding a large-scale joint exercise on Sept. 14–20. Moscow says the training will involve under 13,000 troops, while Western intelligence services say the offensive exercise would be attended about 100,000 soldiers.
Lithuania’s military intelligence says the Zapad scenario is very likely to included an armed conflict with NATO. A part of the training will take place next to the Lithuanian border, therefore, Lithuanian officials do not rule out possible incidents and provocations.
