Seimas plans emigration commission

The initiative was discussed at the meeting of the ruling coalition’s political council earlier this week.

“This is our initiative – emigration-related problems should be addressed, a coordinating institution should be set up, words should be transformed into specific actions, with a strategy and tactics approved,” Paksas told BNS.

He says the political council agreed to form a permanent commission at the start of the fall session.

The Order and Justice party has proposed an institution dedicated to emigration in the past but politicians failed to agree on what it should look like.

According to data provided by the Statistics Department, 38,800 residents emigrated from Lithuania last year, while 22,000 moved to Lithuania. A majority of the immigrants (86.2 percent) were returning Lithuanian citizens.

The United Kingdom remains the most popular emigration destination (with 17,900 or 46.1 percent of emigres), 3,300 (or 8.5 percent) opt for Ireland, and Germany and Norway each attract 3,000 (or 7.7 percent).
