Seimas speaker wants conscription to stay

“I have heard from numerous NATO officers that the mixed system, consisting of professionals and conscripts, is the best model for defence,” the Seimas speaker told the radio Žinių Radijas on Wednesday.

According to the head of the Seimas, when military draft was discontinued in 2008, much of the infrastructure needed to maintain it was destroyed. A lot of resources are now spent on restoring it. Therefore, it would be irrational to create the infrastructure just for five years.

On Thursday chairpersons of political parties represented at the parliament are going to discuss whether conscription should be extended after 2020.
