Seimas supports territorial integrity of Georgia

The Lithuanian Parliament has urged Russia not to recognise the separation of Georgian regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali and to end their occupation, implement international commitments based on 12 August 2008 ceasefire agreement, including the provision to grant access in the two regions to the European Union’s monitoring mission and humanitarian organisations.

The document was adopted after considering the treaty on “alliance and strategic partnership” between the Russian Federation and Georgia’s region of Abkhazia and the treaty of “alliance and integration” between the Russian Federation and Georgia’s region of Tskhinvali.

Members of the Seimas Committee on Foreign Affairs have stressed that the two regions have been occupied by Russia since 2008 war against Georgia. Moreover, efforts of the international community to guarantee Georgia’s territorial integrity and the Geneva Discussions initiated to achieve this goal were unsuccessful – Russia continues to maintain and strengthen its presence in Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions of Georgia and is carrying out the creeping annexation of Georgia.

The Seimas committee has expressed in its statement strong support for Georgia’s territorial integrity and regards the latest and previous treaties signed between the Russian Federation and the occupied regions of Georgia as grossly violating Georgia’s territorial integrity and contravening the principles of the international law.

The committee has emphasised that the Russian Federation must commit not to use force in order for the conflict to be regulated and stability maintained.
