“Speaking about specific numbers of those liable for military conscription, time-frames of readiness to accept them and provide for them is still too early today,” Žukas’ words were communicated to BNS by his spokesman, Captain Mindaugas Neimontas.
He emphasized that an initial conversation took place in the government about the possibility of introducing universal conscription to mandatory initial military service.
The general expressed support to the idea of universal conscription, however, said it “required very good preparations.”
After a meeting with leadership of the Armed Forces and the Defense Ministry, Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis said universal conscription of young men would be introduced in 2019. Defence Minister Raimundas Karoblis believes two years of preparations would not be enough, adding the scheme was only possible in 2020-2021.
