“The Swedish Foreign Ministry has not said that the issue of NordBalt and the Russian boats was wrong according to international law. What we say is that the Lithuanian project has a right to operate without being disturbed by others. Sweden have been in contact with Russian authorities and will continue the talks after the weekend,” the ministry’s spokesman Pezhman Fivrin told BNS.
Last Thursday, Lithuania’s Foreign Ministry summoned Russia’s Ambassador to Lithuania Alexander Udaltsov. The ministry said that the Russian navy’s actions in Lithuania’s exclusive economic zone in the Baltic Sea violate provisions of the United Nations (UN) Convention on Maritime Law, also hindering navigation and economic operations.
The ministry also said that the Russian Navy‘s actions were aimed at interfering with laying of the NordBalt cable.
Litgrid, the Lithuanian power transmission system operator in charge of the project, said that the ship guarding the laying of NordBalt cable between Lithuania and Sweden on Thursday was forced out of the zone has not affected the project.
