Swiss and Belarusian inspectors to check Lithuania’s weaponry

The international group of arms inspectors headed by Switzerland and involving a representative of Belarus will perform an inspection of the Lithuanian district of its choice under the requirements of the 2011 Vienna document of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

In the district measuring up to 20,000 sq. km in area, the arms control inspectors will be able to visit the Lithuanian army‘s training grounds, the National Defense Volunteer Forces and the Mechanized Infantry Brigade. Also, as envisaged in the Vienna document, the group will have the right to fly above the area on an airplane of the Lithuanian Air Forces to check for undeclared military operations.

Under the requirements of the Vienna document, countries are to prepare a report after every inspection and disseminate it among OSCE member-states about the implementation of the requirements of international arms control agreements by the country under scrutiny.

This is the second foreign arms inspection in Lithuania this year. In July, an inspection was carried out by Russian arms control inspectors.
