Team Lithuania at Rio Olympics: Boxing

22-year-old Evaldas Petrauskas will compete in the light welterweight category. The Lithuanian, who stands 164cm tall and weighs 64kg, already has an Olympic medal from London Games in 2012. Back then, Petrauskas lost in the semifinal fight to the Korean boxer Han Soon-chul with a score 18-13.

Petrauskas secured gold in the youth Olympics in Singapore in 2010.

In Rio, Petrauskas hopes to at least repeat his achievement in London.

The second Lithuanian boxer in Rio Olympics will be 21-year-old Eimantas Stanionis.

Stanionis will have his Olympic debut in Rio where he will fight in the Welterweight category. The young Lithuanian was in the top 8 at the 2012 AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships in Yerevan, Armenia, and despite his young age is not a rookie, having fought already in more than 120 matches during his short professional career.

At the 2015 World Amateur Boxing Championships he finished in 5th, but secured gold in the European championships in Semakov, Bulgaria, in the same year, where he beat his Belarussian opponent Pavel Kastramin.

By the way, Stanionis’ compatriot Petrauskas won the bronze medal in the same tournament.

“Stanionis likes to boxing at mid-range, putting pressure on his opponents using his fast movements. He has powerful punches, and maintains excellent defensive movements behind a tall guard,” the official site of the International Boxing Association (Amateur), www.aibaproboxing.com, describes Stanionis.
