US troops move training to Panevėžys

Alytus held a farewell ceremony for the US Army’s 173rd paratrooper brigade on Tuesday. During the joint exercise since June, the US and the Lithuanian soldiers improved their combat skills, interaction procedures and learned from each other’s experience.

From now on, the US rotational troops will drill their joint action skills with soldiers of the King Mindaugas Battalion in Panevėžys.

The paratrooper brigade is the 6th shift of US rotational forces in Lithuania deployed in the Baltic states and Poland since spring of 2014 as one of the measures taken by NATO in the wake of the changed security situation in the region following the Russian annexation of Crimea.

The incoming US troops attend all main exercises held in Lithuania and the other two Baltic states. Lithuania, in its turn, provides the US troops with the necessary hosting country support, including accommodation, meals and logistic support.
