US weaponry should reach Baltic states in early 2016

Each of the three Baltic states – Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia – will accommodate elements of heavy weaponry including tanks, infantry fighting vehicles and artillery, US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter told Baltic defense ministers in Tallinn.

According to the press release, the secretary restated the US firm commitment to the security of the three Baltic nations. “An attack on one of your countries is an attack on the entire NATO,” he asserted.

Lithuania’s Defence Minister Juozas Olekas, in his turn, stated that Lithuania was already ready to host the Allied forces and equipment.

Earlier on Tuesday, Carter confirmed Washington’s plans to station about 250 tanks, armored vehicles and other military equipment in seven European countries to reassure the NATO Allies that are faced with the threats in the light of Russian policies and operations of international terrorist groups.

The plans also include deployment of Bradley infantry fighting vehicles and self-propelled howitzers.

The Baltic defense ministers met with the US defense secretary on the eve of the Brussels meeting of NATO defence ministers.
