Vilnius panel wants street in Šnipiškės named after Polish ex-president

Audronis Imbrasas, chairman of the municipality’s Commission for Names, Monuments and Commemorative Plaques, says that the commission had given a green light to the administration’s last Friday after rejecting an offer from the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania – Union of Christian Families to name a nameless street in Vilnius old town.

Povilas Poderskis, director of the Vilnius administration, is convinced that the decision to give the Polish president’s name to a nameless street in the modern Vilnius center would properly immortalize the memory of Kaczynski.

“I believe the location is great and will duly celebrate the name. It benefits the bilateral ties, it is meaningful, as the president was a good ally of the state of Lithuania, therefore, we naturally want to immortalize him for Lithuania’s centennial anniversary,” Poderskis told BNS.

The final decision will be made by the municipal council after discussing the Polish party’s proposal.

Headed by the Polish party, the Vilnius district municipality recently named a street in Maisiagala, a town in the Vilnius district, after Kaczynski.

Born in 1949, Kaczynski, a lawyer by education, and his wife and a hundred of other prominent politicians, military and religious figures, were killed in a plane crash near Smolensk, Russia, in 2010.
