According to Alytus regional environmental protection department director Stasys Vanagas, the department’s specialists began observing the Nemunas river and taking water tests immediately after they heard reports of the explosion. No changes have been reported.
After reports of yet another explosion, the river’s parameters actually improved, meaning that the events were probably local in nature.
Vanagas, however, criticised Belarus’ institutions, which should have notified Lithuania about the potential threat. He also criticised the neighbouring state for allowing bloodsucking gnats to migrate into Lithuania through the Nemunas.
Lithuania has spent money on eliminating them while Belarus has not.
