Kaunas is the second-largest city in Lithuania after the capital city, Vilnius. The city is one of the most beautiful in Europe, filled with art and culture. Once you’ve toured the museums and seen the street art, it also has a lively nightlife, with bustling bars and restaurants.
Kaunas holds the “UNESCO city of design” due to its stunning modern architecture. It is the first Central or Eastern European city to do so.
The city’s modernist architecture dates from the early days of Lithuanian independence. Kaunas was the first capital city and the architecture reflects its status. The art deco and modernist buildings, such as the Central Post Office, have impressive curved glass and marble facades. Kaunas still has an outstanding heritage of more than 6,000 buildings from that golden era of modernism. The pedestrianized town center makes it easy to view all these treasures.
If you are in awe of its modernist architecture, wait until you see its streets. Street art is everywhere in Kaunas, from full-wall murals to Vytenis Jakas’ courtyard gallery. The Nykoka Festival, which began in 2014, celebrates street art in all its forms.
As well as street art, there are several art galleries including M. Žilinkas Art Gallery, housed in a spectacular building built in 1989, a continuation of Kaunas’ modernist architectural tradition.
As a result of its artistic flair, the city takes the mantle of the European capital of culture in 2022.
As well as art and architecture, Kaunas has lots of interesting museums to visit. There is an Art Deco Museum, where you can see what a 1930s Art Deco apartment was really like. If you want something a less serious, the Clown Museum may be the place for you.
Kaunas is a wonderful city for you to discover while it is still off the beaten path. Enjoy its famous modern architecture, street arts, emblematic casinos or hop on your phone and try the top online game for Irish players and of course, museums.
If you want to get out and about, you can ride the two oldest funiculars in the world, have a picnic at Santaka Park, or walk along the rivers.
Kaunas is the perfect city break destination.
