“Ten days have passed since I announced the start of registration, and we already have more than 100 volunteers,” said the minister.
Olekas also presented the financial benefits for conscripts envisaged in the bill. Depending on performance, monthly payments of 70-170 euros per month would be accumulated for conscripts. The cumulative fund would grow by a fourth, if the young man applies for mandatory service voluntarily.
The defence minister has said that every conscript would receive an additional payment of 140 euros.
The bill also envisages a possibility to put off mortgage loans until the end of the mandatory military service.
In the light of the geopolitical situation, the parliament in March adopted a legal amendment to reintroduce mandatory military service, with 3,000-3,500 conscripts to be drafted this fall.
