The new units will be situated on Liepkalnis Street and in the village of Rokantiškės near Vilnius. The current Vilnius-based command units and headquarters as well as logistics and Military Police units will be moved there by 2022.
“The existing military infrastructure in several Vilnius locations were built back in the Soviet times and no longer meet the army’s security and other requirements, and the renovation would not solve all problems. Following an analysis, it was decided to develop new infrastructure matching the Lithuanian army‘s needs, moving it outside the capital,” National Defence Minister Juozas Olekas was quoted as saying in a statement.
According to the ministry, other army units might also be moved to the new facilities in the long-term.
The projects will involve the construction of new administrative buildings, general use premises, storage facilities, garages and other infrastructure needed for military needs and physical training of troops.
The new infrastructure will be also adapted to the needs of the NATO command and control element being established in Lithuania. The new military objects will be also adapted to rendering host nation support for the execution of tasks in case of a crisis.
The implementation of the project should start in 2016 and be finished by 2022. It is estimated to cost around EUR 67 million.
