20 more Syrian refugees relocated to Lithuania under EU programme

“All 20 successfully landed today,” Interior Minister Tomas Žilinskas told BNS on Wednesday.

The group consists of three families. The first family includes a middle-aged former construction worker, his stay-at-home wife and seven children; the second family is a 36-year-old tailor, his 29-year-old wife, a housewife, and three children; while the third family includes a 37-year-old chef, his 28-year-old wife, a housewife, and their four children.

The refugees came to Lithuania under the EU-Turkey agreement reached in March, which suggest that all illegal migrants coming from Turkey to overfilled Greek islands would be send back, while only Syrian war refugees would be relocated to the EU from Turkey.

To date, Lithuania has received 102 refugees. The country still has a year left to implement its commitment to the EU to accept just over 1,000 refugees.

The interior minister has said Lithuania would not meet the plan, if it fails to expand its infrastructure capacities or revise the integration scheme.
