Vilnius is raising this issue during a meeting of the Convention on Nuclear Safety that is taking place in Vienna between March 27 and April 7.

“Lithuania seeks that the final documents of the review meeting should underline the requirements for site selection and assessment under the IAEA safety standards,” the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry said in a press release.

IAEA Deputy Director General Juan Carlos Lentijo told BNS in February that the agency had not reviewed the site selection process during its Site and External Events Design (SEED) mission to Belarus in January because it had not been asked to by the host country.

He said that the IAEA could not push a country to request its services.

Lithuania says that Belarus is building the nuclear utility in violation of the provisions of the Espoo and Aarhus conventions.
