“We will go to the Cabinet meeting on Mar. 14 with two options, at best: either we strengthen a separate Migration Department and carry out a reform of territorial units based on it, or we do the same thing but within the police system,” the minister told Žinių Radijas on Thursday.
“In my opinion, it would be more rational to strengthen the Migration Department,” he added.
The minister said that it was not a function of the police to deal with migration issues, adding that “the problem of migration will only become more complex” in the future.
The Migration Department has come under criticism for its failure to cope with growing numbers of immigrants, especially from Ukraine.
Misiunas has repeatedly criticized Evelina Gudzinskaitė, the department’s director, for her work, but she refuses to step down.
