A secret “Farmer” meeting in Seimas – a rebellion against R. Karbauskis?

On late Monday evening the Seimas’ Farmer and Greens Union group members gathered for a meeting which acted as a significant slap in the face for party chairman Ramūnas Karbauskis.

According to LVŽS deputy chairwoman, Seimas vice Speaker Rima Baškienė, during the meeting group committee chairpeople, deputies and other key members decided to not include a proposal made by R. Karbauskis, to disband the Seimas Suicide and Violence Prevention Commission led by conservative Mykolas Majauskas, instead forming a new Violence and Suicide Prevention Commission, in tomorrow’s Seimas agenda.

The proposal was registered by LVŽS group prefect and Seimas Committee of Culture Chairman R. Karbauskis himself, but according to Seimas vice Speaker R. Baškienė, it will be requested to remove the question from the agenda.

“We exchanged opinions and came to the conclusion that the Commission is of great importance, is active and works well, there is no need to disband it and form a new one. Our group was very active [in creating the commission] and we will ask to remain consistent,” Baškienė said.

Karbauskis himself did not participate in the aforementioned group meeting. According to available sources, on Monday he was participating in the opening of a summer camp he is the patron of in Šiauliai region.

“We informed him [R. Karbauskis] of our exchange of opinions and the consensus [to not disband the commission and remove the question from the agenda] we arrived at. Tomorrow morning prior to the prefect meeting we will exchange views again, just this time along with the entire Seimas group and then we will have a final decision,” R. Baškienė told Delfi on late Monday evening.

Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis, who was delegated to his post by the party, was also not present at the Monday meeting and declined to make further comments on the matter. Similarly it was not possible to obtain any comments from R. Karbauskis – the member of Seimas did not answer any phone calls or text messages.
