“I am pleased to present specific proposals and a coherent plan of what needs to be done to prevent similar drinking-related tragedies like the one in Kėdainiai district. There is a lot of talking about alcoholism, social problems but we want to achieve a secure environment in Lithuania would be accessible to everyone,” said Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats leader Gabrielius Landsbergis said.

Limitation of alcohol availability, appropriate social assistance and better employment opportunities are the essential changes needed, according to Landsbergis.

One of the 38 proposed measures to combat the epidemic – is that chronic drinkers should have their social welfare payments stopped and social services cut until they agree to receive treatment.

The conservatives are also proposing that alcohol should only be sold at the speciality stores in the future.
