Archaeologists reveal mystery of Klaipėda castle

The castle was later replaced by a stone citadel.

“The guesses for decades were that the first castle was built by the Livonian Order somewhere else than the current location – it was to the north, while others thought it was to the south. Now it is clear – they used the same island. The conclusions were drawn after this year’s archaeological tests based on paleogeographic data,” Gintautas Zabiela behind the conclusion told the daily.

Archaeologists examined an area of 1,000 square meters, about 2-5 m deep.
