Audit to assess whether Lithuania has too many public servants

The National Audit Office is carry out a audit on whether Lithuania has too many civil servants and whether money is being wasted on employing too many public officials.

There are 14 government ministries in Lithuania compared to just seven in Switzerland, a country with almost three times the population, and Sweden has 10 ministries for a population of 9.5 million.

On the other hand, Luxembourg with a population six times smaller population has 20 ministries, and Greece, which is weighed down in debt has 16 ministries.

“We notice that now some people make a distinction between statutory officers and public officials, others talk about civil servants. To the average person they all are public servants. A holistic approach is needed here. Our institution plans to concentrate on that overarching view in the audit,” said Arūnas Dulkys, the state controller.
