Lithuanian diplomats that are tasked with helping Lithuanian companies find business partners abroad will now be provided with more specific and targeted tasks and supports to boost exports.
The new approach was discussed by Lithuanian diplomats working as economic and commercial attachés at their annual conference in Vilnius.
Exports are one of the most important engines of Lithuania‘s economy generating one third of the country’s jobs and accounting for about 80% of GDP.
“We already have successful examples – in Japan Lithuania is respected for lasers and linen, in Germany – the metal industry, Israeli’s enjoy Lithuanian cheeses and China its ice cream. However, knowing how important export is to our country and trying to justify the growing business needs, we need to seek more effective communication between institutions and the diplomatic missions,” said Deputy Minister of Agriculture Rasa Noreikienė.
The new approach will see the country‘s strategic objectives converted into specific objectives on the ground for commercial attaches, including organising trade missions and attending business conferences.
At the end of 2015 Lithuania created a list of 10 key target markets for developing exports: Sweden, Norway, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, the US, China, Israel, Japan, Ukraine.
