The lives of fallen GDL noblemen

The noble estate enjoyed the most important position in the social hierarchy of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The nobility, however, was far from homogenous. It consisted of aristocrats, (the magnates), as well as of middling and petty nobles who owned little or no land at all respectively. The importance and financial might of noble families and even particular individuals was constantly fluctuating. Many families went through a process of ascent and subsequent slide down or even oblivion. A considerable number of the noblemen were utterly poor. They sometimes could hardly afford their daily meals yet they still enjoyed all the privileges of the estate. Some of them – mostly vagabonds – would eventually cross the line and lose their symbols of the nobility. They would live on accidental income, sometimes illegal, and would very often end up in prisons or on the scaffold. Lithuania gets prime time on Israel and China TVs

Israeli culinary guru Gil Hovav’s new TV show Open Skies about Lithuania on Keshet 12 channel counted about a million viewers. The half-hour show featured a variety of Lithuanian dishes along with the most interesting stories from different corners of the country. This month, Lithuania has also been shown on four TV editions on Travel China Channel made by reputed China’s traveller Zhang Wei, each show reaching 20 million viewers. The nine-minute shows managed to capture the best of Lithuania, including amber cathing, Samogitian partying, basketball game at the Kaunas Žalgiris Arena, as well as stories about the Lithuanian rain, the old town churches of Vilnius, the miracle tile, Pažaislis, M. Recognition: Scandinavian Michelin worth Lithuanian restaurants

The chefs of as many as eight restaurants in Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda woke up as part of the Baltic cream of the crop following the reputable Scandinavian White Guide 2018 evaluations of restaurants that happened for the second time now in our country. Lithuanian parliament proposes total ban on legal gender recognition

On November 10th, 2017 the group of 31 MPs in the Lithuanian Parliament registered a legislative proposal, which aims at banning legal gender recognition (i.e. change of identity documents for transgender persons) and all medical procedures pertaining to gender reassignment treatment. This proposal stands in a sharp contrast with the jurisprudence of the national courts, granting legal gender recognition based on self-identification of a trans individual and corresponding mental diagnosis. If approved, Lithuania would become the only country within the broader region of the Council of Europe with an explicit ban on gender reassignment procedure, a press release from the Lithuanian Gay League states.
