Baltic farmers and Lithuanian PM write to EU heads seeking compensation

Baltic farmers stressed that the fall in the prices of dairy products has not stopped and that producers continue to suffer losses due to the Russian embargo and price fluctuations in international markets.

Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian farmers sent a joint appeal to the Commissioner Hogan with the letter asking for compensation of €15 million for Lithuanian milk producers, almost twice the level of compensation Latvian and Estonian farmers are demanding.

Meanwhile, Lithuania’s Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius has written a letter to the European Commission (EC) President Jean-Claude Juncker asking him to address the current difficulties of Lithuanian dairy sector, with a request for urgent and concrete action to improve the situation.

Butkevicius said in the letter that the dairy sector in Lithuania is currently experiencing a major crisis and stressed the need to compensate for dairy farmers to be compensated for their losses to keep the industry going. He said that in finding a comprehensive solution to ease the situation in the dairy sector the European Commission could seek to simplify state aid rules.
