“British ambassadors to Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Slovenia, and Slovakia will be given higher status and additional political and lobbying staff. The prime minister’s team wants to cultivate good relations with like-minded EU states ahead of Brexit talks due to start by March 31,” Bloomberg quoted a senior British official as saying.

Theresa May‘s government hopes “to exploit concerns over security and finances in order to split the EU’s united front, according to the official, who did not want to be identified discussing confidential government strategy,” the news agency wrote on Tuesday.

Lithuanian diplomats confirmed to BNS that they had been informed about Britain’s intention to increase the embassy staff.

“In preparation for the period of withdrawal from the EU and in an effort to maintain ties with EU countries, the United Kingdom is ready for active cooperation in the bilateral format. We know from meetings with UK officials about the intention to increase the staff of embassies,” Rasa Jakilaitienė, the foreign minister’s spokeswoman, told BNS.
