The first six months of 2016 saw growth in transportation of goods. Experts predict that the transport sector’s share in the gross domestic product will be up to two and a half percent higher this year than in 2015.
Results of the first half of the year show that Klaipėda seaport experienced the biggest growth of transportation of goods, 5.5% year-on-year.
Klaipėda is the only port in the Baltic countries where cargo volumes have increased. Moreover, more goods have been transported by road and rail in Lithuania. This, according to experts, has been due to stronger positions of Lithuanian carriers in Western markets and stabilized transportation between Lithuania and Russia.
At the same time, cargo transportation by air fell more than 1% this year, even though 14% more passengers have travelled through the country’s three airports than last year.
Exports to European Union countries are rapidly growing, exports to Russia and Belarus are getting more stable. Export to the UK has shown the fastest growth, 1.5 times.
