Caritas appeals to Lithuanians to help flood-hit India

“Lithuania is currently is making intensive preparations to welcome Pope Francis, who actively cares about the poor and the environment and contributes to various charity and aid projects,” Bishop Kęstutis Kevalas said in a statement forwarded to BNS.

“Led by the example of the pope, we are invited to do a good deed by contributing to aid to people in Kerala who are suffering the consequences of the natural disaster,” he said.

This summer’s devastating floods in India claimed about 450 lives and a million people were injured or were forced to seek shelter in temporary evacuation camps.

The government says that more than 10,000 kilometers of roads were destroyed or damaged and figures from the parliament show that 50,000 homes were washed away by flooding.

The Indian flood victims urgently need medicines, food, drinking water and clothing, Caritas said.

The aid campaign will run until November 17.
