Dutch and Lithuanian interests deeply intertwined, says ambassador

Ludo Segers talks to the Dutch ambassador about taking over the presidency of the European council, on why David Cameron’s speech on getting a new deal for Britain with the EU was not anti-European, on how the Netherlands security interests are intrinsically intertwined with those of Lithuania and the Baltic States, and on how a new statue to be unveiled in Kaunas will commemorate an unsung Dutch hero of the Holocaust. Russia wouldn’t open ‘third front’ in Baltics, says Russian journalist

Alexei Venediktov, the editor-in-chief of Echo Moskvy, spoke to Delfi about the threat of escalation in the tensions between Russia and the Baltics. His radio station is considered by many to be the last major independent media outlet in Russia, and has run into trouble with Russian government media regulators in the past. […]

Russia paying financial compensation? A fata morgana

The issue re-appeared rather unexpectedly. On 5 November, after a meeting in Riga, the Justice Ministers of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania released a statement, in which they peremptorily declared that their countries had been occupied by and had been “exploited for political and economic needs” by the Soviet Union. The “enormous demographic and socio-economic losses”, caused by “the totalitarian communist occupation regime of the USSR.” should be “calculated in a scientifically-justified manner”, they said. The final step would be that they would “claim legally and factually justified compensation from the Russian Federation”. […]

Opinion: Let’s learn from others’ mistakes on refugee integration

“We’re taking 1,105 refugees only and no more. We’ll house them in closed off areas and then ask them to leave. That’s how Lithuania will resist the EU ‘Diktat’, defend its sovereignty and avoid the trouble plaguing Europe”. That’s the talk of certain politicians who have remained silent about the fact that, in recent years, the number of foreigners has risen sharply without a single refugee having been accepted and with immigration challenges still to be faced. Reforms needed to put Georgia on European track

Bringing Georgia closer to European but also Atlantic institutional structures continued to be one of Lithuania’s most important foreign policy objectives this year. Despite Russia’s creeping occupation efforts over the summer and the ramping up of its massive anti-Western propaganda machine, the small South Caucasus country is still firmly resolved to follow the Euro-Atlantic course. An American in Vilnius

In September of 2015, I purchased a round trip flight to Vilnius from my home town of Boston, MA (US). I had just recently become engaged to a Lithuanian girl who was now apologizing into my left ear as I confirmed the purchase online. “The weather will be awful this time of year. You will see eight weeks of rain and overcast.” I clicked “confirm flight” and looked up at her. “I’m not visiting Lithuania to get a tan, I am coming to experience your culture and to meet your family.” […]

Opinion: Winning back hearts and souls of Lithuania’s citizens

The West now faces bigger problems than Ukraine’s future or Russia’s plans for its neighbours. The growing threat of terrorism makes Russia more and more indispensable to its Western partners. That’s dangerous for the Baltic states because there’s no way that the Kremlin will renounce its aggressive goals, get lost in Syria or run out of resources for all of its front lines. […]

Opinion: Putin the troll

Tolkienites would say that trolls are creatures originated from stone and that they lurk in dark caves and gloomy forests, that they’re the scivies of evil forces that inhabit the Middle Earth. They’re big and vicious and form the forefront of Lord Mordor’s army, always ready to be the first to get into a fight. Daylight gets rid of trolls, because when exposed to it they turn to stone. But the trolls I want to talk about are not from J R Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings universe. […]
