The woman turned to court after she married UK citizen P. J. Warne and was issued a marriage certificate where her new surname was spelled with a V.

Vilnius City District Court confirmed it to BNS Lithuania that the decision by Vilnius City Municipality’s Civil Registration Division was annulled, and the division was ordered to issue a new marriage certificate with the surname spelled “Warne”.

Lithuanian courts previously issued a number of rulings ordering institutions to issue personal documents with surnames spelled in their original form, using the Latin characters “w” and “q”.

The State Lithuanian Language Commission said earlier that personal names on the main page of a document can be spelled using Latin-based characters if persons married to foreign citizens or foreigners having Lithuanian citizenship ask for it.
