The World Health Organisation (WHO) has said that cycling in Lithuania is just as dangerous as riding a motorcycle or driving a car. However, the highest mortality rate is recorded in car-related accidents, according to WHO data.
Cycling paths are underdeveloped in Lithuania and bicycles are often ridden by drunk cyclists, people rarely use mandatory safety measures such as reflective vests and lights.
Pedestrians also experience significant risks as they are second only to car passengers and drivers in mortality during traffic accidents.
To compare Poland and the Baltics, Lithuania has the most traffic casualties, almost 11 deaths per 100,000 people and around half of those deaths are linked to cars.
