Director of major Lithuanian hospital suspended on abuse suspicions

Kęstutis Strupas
DELFI / Andrius Ufartas

The decision to suspend Professor Strupas was made during a meeting of the Health Ministry and Vilnius University, the hospital’s shareholders, it said.

In accordance with the Labour Code, the director general has been suspended for a month. The shareholders consider turning to law-enforcement bodies over a longer suspension in the future.

Juozas Raistenskis, director of Santaros’ Children Hospital, will temporarily head the whole hospital until a person not linked to Santaros and the healthcare system is appointed as acting director general.

The Special Investigation Service (STT) said on Wednesday that it was investigating a suspected large-scale corruption scheme in which bribes, disguised as financial support to the hospital, were demanded from businesses in exchange for public procurement contracts.
