EBU rep doubts efficiency of Lithuania’s sanctions on Russian TV channels

“In the new times, when you have so many open channels, open opportunities of information, it is not the time when you restrict information, but you rather respond to this information with much larger, broader, much more profound, much more high quality content. I would say to produce more programs of high quality, which target different groups in the society, rather than restricting, at a national level,” Radka Betcheva, the head of member relations for Eastern Europe at the EBU, told BNS on Wednesday.

The Lithuanian Radio and Television Commission (LRTK) decided earlier in the day to order the Russian-language TV channel RTR Planeta off the air in the country for a year.

According to the media watchdog, three instances of incitement to war and hatred in programs aired on RTR Planeta have been registered over the past year, including threats to destroy the United States and to restore the Soviet Union with all of its former territories.

The EBU, an alliance of public service media, has 73 members in 56 countries.
