The programme gives a general outline of Lithuania’s priorities which will require EUR 1.9 billion of public funds (EUR 1.6 billion from the EU budget and EUR 0.3 billion from the national budget) to be implemented during the period from 2014 to 2020.

The main goals of the Lithuanian Rural Development Programme are to modernise small and medium-sized farms and improve the results of their economic activities (nearly 8,000 farms are planned to be supported), to preserve biological diversity (11 percent of agricultural land), to improve the condition of soil (8 percent of agricultural land), to promote organic farming, create new jobs (2,000 jobs to be created) and develop rural areas and local businesses.

“The confirmation of the Lithuanian Rural Development Programme is an important historic moment for our country. Although the programme is evaluated in terms of money, its importance to the development of the entire country and, in particular, of rural areas is invaluable. We must make the most of those measures established in the programme in order to achieve our goals,” said Lithuanian Minister of Agriculture Virginija Baltraitienė.
