“Our proposal is to terminate the studies in July. If the parliament makes the decision on merger of the universities, the current students of LEU could transfer to VDU and continue with their studies,” Education and Science Minister Jurgita Petrauskienė said at a meeting of the parliamentary Education and Science Committee on Wednesday.

In December, LEU received the second negative grade, which makes it possible to cancel the authorization for studies and studies-related activities.

Lithuania’s parliament is currently considering merger of universities, i.e., connection of Vilnius-based LEU and the Kaunas-based Aleksandras Stulginskis University to the Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas.

The bid is yet to be decided by parliamentary vote, with the decision to be made on Friday.

In November, the government approved a university restructuring plan, which envisages restructuring of Lithuania’s current 14 universities into nine.
